The fifth wheel truck camper as one might say is a nice way to travel. Tom a person I know from Virginia has a 1998 5th wheel camper that has everything you could need to live.
The important thing to remember about towing a fifth wheel trailer is the type of truck you have.
Since the weight of the unit ranges from seven thousand pounds up to nineteen thousand pounds, the truck you use needs to be compatible to the weight you are pulling. If you have a 33 ft trailer and a Chevy S-10 pickup truck, you are not going to have success pulling this large of a unit.
For example a 1997 Carriage 5th wheel with a twenty-six foot length weighting about seven thousand pounds including fluids, might be able to be pulled with a Chevy S-10. It all depends on your manual for the truck. It will tell you what your weight capabilities are regarding towing.
I saw a person in Vermont a while back who had a small truck and a 31 ft 5th wheel, he could hardly make the thing move through the campground. He said it was just a way to get it there, not travel anywhere. I thought to myself “That poor truck and transmission”.
You never want to pull the fifth wheel truck camper with a truck that is going to struggle with the pull.
Weight and length are important considerations when you buy a 5th wheel as well as what type of truck you will need. Manufacturers have specifications on what trucks can do and not do, as well as the fifth wheel recommendations.
You need to stick to the guidelines or you may end up canceling out any warranty to the truck and the 5th wheel. Then you could end up thousand dollars of repair bills paid by you.
